SAP Basis as a job title
Instead of data maintenance and application development, SAP Basis is more about providing and maintaining the software environment on which the data resides and is processed. Therefore, SAP Basis is an important core of any SAP infrastructure and is required in both previous versions such as R/3, as well as current versions such as S/4HANA 2021.
SAP Basis is responsible for the smooth operation of the SAP Basis system. The SAP Basis system is like an operating system for R/3 as well as S/4. Every operating system, such as Windows, provides an environment in which programs developed for that environment can run, such as MS Office. Likewise, the SAP Basis system provides an environment in which SAP programs can run. In any R/3 or S/4 system, there is a database server, such as HANA, where the database resides. It provides the necessary data to all other applications. The data here is not only data tables, but also applications, system control tables and user data.
Known errors
In order to drive innovation in the company, it is necessary to establish a team or a few experts whose recognised role is to promote research projects and PoCs, to continuously train themselves in this regard, to develop innovation proposals and to bring them into the committees. They are therefore largely excluded from operational operations. SAP thus provides the underlying basis (hence the name) that enables various SAP applications to be interoperable and portable across operating systems and databases.
