SAP Basis is responsible for the smooth operation of the SAP Basis system. The SAP Basis system is like an operating system for R/3 as well as S/4. Every operating system, such as Windows, provides an environment in which programs developed for that environment can run, such as MS Office. Likewise, the SAP Basis system provides an environment in which SAP programs can run. In any R/3 or S/4 system, there is a database server, such as HANA, where the database resides. It provides the necessary data to all other applications. The data here is not only data tables, but also applications, system control tables and user data.

In the case of client settings, you should ensure that the production client is protected against overwriting and that changes are only approved via the transport management system (TMS) to ensure traceability. In the interests of system security, changes to repository and client-independent objects should also not be permitted. The use of eCATT and CATT should also be at least restricted, as allowing them can lead to significant database changes.

This is the heart of the SAP system. In the classic three-tier model, this would be the logic or control layer. One or more application servers host the necessary services for the various applications at this layer. These application servers provide all the services required by the SAP applications. By integrating the SAP basis into the development of the IT strategy, the digitisation strategy and a clear communication with the CIO, the SAP basis has the opportunity to deal with technologies and topics at an early stage. As a result, the SAP basis is prepared for requests from business units or other IT departments and has the opportunity to approach them proactively. The SAP basis is supported by an IT service and IT product catalogue, which describes the scope of the SAP basis. For internal communication and communication with external service providers, as well as other suppliers, outsourcing partners or outsourcing partners and cloud service providers, there are up-to-date and meaningful documentation and process descriptions. For the control, measurement and monitoring of external partners, Service Level Agreements and meaningful key figures are also available.
